RE: PAM Statement by Federal Health Minister
Yesterday, Dr. Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, issued a statement for Pharmacist Awareness Month (PAM) highlighting the important role pharmacists play in the health care system:
Message from the Minister of Health - Pharmacist Awareness Month March 2016
March is Pharmacist Awareness Month. As a doctor, I appreciate the importance of pharmacists as trusted and valued members of the health care team, who work closely with patients, physicians, nurses, and other health professionals to ensure medication use is safe and effective. They empower patients with the information they need to be involved in their own care-helping them to understand what medications to take and how-and they help to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions. The pharmacist's contributions as part of the larger health care team result in better health outcomes, improved patient safety, and reduced health care costs. In short, pharmacists truly do more for patients.
As Minister of Health, I have recently begun working with the provinces and territories toward an improved health care system for all Canadians. The expertise of pharmacists and other frontline health care professionals will be invaluable as we look to reduce prescription drug costs, improve access to mental health care, and make home care more available. In terms of home care especially, pharmacists will be essential in helping to ensure successful transitions as patients move between places of care.
Our Government thanks pharmacists for their dedication and professionalism in keeping Canadians safe and healthy. They are truly indispensable members of our health care teams.
The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
